Thursday · The Small Thing
One minute of what is left
The light goes in the middle of the afternoon now, and most days it goes without being looked at.

This is one minute at a window while there is still something to see. It is not a treatment, and it is not the bright lamp that gets prescribed for winter low mood, which is a different thing at a different strength.

What it is, is the cheapest daylight available to you, taken on purpose rather than through a gap in the curtains.

Today’s Practice

Find a window with the most light in it and stand or sit there.

• Go before three. The afternoon takes the light early now, so the minute has to happen while there is some.
• Face it and stop. Eyes toward the light but never at the sun, hands empty, nothing else happening.

If standing is the hard part, sit. And if what the dark half brings this year is flatness that will not lift, that is a doctor rather than a window.

The light is going whether or not anybody watches it. One minute of it is still yours to take.

P.S. Tomorrow, a permission slip for the invitations that have started arriving, and for the ones that have not.
